People treat Marvell as a Santa Clara listing that always sold a data-center switch chip from a Nasdaq-100 and S and P 500 book.
The first book was a kitchen table.
In 1995 Sehat Sutardja, Weili Dai and Pantas Sutardja wrote Marvell Technology around a CMOS read channel for disk drives.
They wanted a name that meant marvelous. Other chip houses already ended in el, so they added a second L.
Conventional shops said a silicon-only read channel would not work. Seagate became the first customer. Western Digital and Samsung followed.
The company listed six million shares on Nasdaq on 27 June 2000 at 15 dollars a share and raised 90 million dollars.
The mechanism is a fabless design that puts the analog work of a disk head into complementary metal-oxide silicon, cutting power and cost without owning a foundry.
The pin is Santa Clara, the city the public book still uses, not a later Bermuda or Singapore holding line.
