Consumer History | CJ CheilJedang — Twenty-Five Tonnes of Sugar from Jeonpo-dong
kevin
People treat CJ CheilJedang as a Jung-gu listing that always sold Bibigo dumplings and Hetbahn rice from a holding company spun out of Samsung.
The first book was a sugar house built while the front still fired.
On 1 August 1953 Lee Byung-chul incorporated Cheil Jedang Industrial as Samsung's first factory company.
The office work had started that spring in a corner of Samsung Mulsan's building on Daegyo-ro in Busan.
The plant itself rose on about 1,000 pyeong at Jeonpo-dong 743, Busanjin.
Capital was 20 million hwan.
Equipment was ordered from Japan against an 180,000-dollar government loan and a further 20 million hwan from Sanggong Bank.
On 5 November 1953 Lee pressed the switch on a line rated at 25 tonnes of refined sugar a day.
Imported sugar then sold near 300 hwan per geun.
The Busan crystals sold near 100 hwan.
Within a year the line was doubled to 50 tonnes and was feeding about one third of domestic demand.
Flour milling began in 1958.
Seasoning followed.
Dasida shipped in 1975.
The food book left Samsung's group register in the mid-1990s and took the letters CJ from Cheil Jedang.
The listed operating company dates from a 2007 split.
The first plant later moved.
The surviving Busan works sits in Saha-gu, not on the original Jeonpo lot.
The pin is Jeonpo, where Korean private capital first refined sugar at industrial scale.
