People treat Akamai as the glass campus at 145 Broadway that always sold an edge node from an S and P 500 book.
The first book left Tom Leighton's MIT office.
On 20 August 1998 Daniel Lewin and F. Thomson Leighton incorporated Akamai Technologies after an MIT 50K Entrepreneurship Competition finalist pitch built on consistent hashing.
Tim Berners-Lee had asked MIT in 1995 to invent a better way to move a web page through congestion. Leighton took the problem into the Algorithms Group. Graduate student Lewin helped write the math.
A dozen people, mostly MIT undergraduates, then moved into a small Cambridge incubator. The early public rooms sat at 201 Broadway, fourth floor.
The company licensed the work from MIT that October. The name is Hawaiian for clever, or, in the office, cool.
The mechanism is a map that sends a request to a nearby copy of a file instead of one origin server, so a spike does not have to cross the whole internet.
The pin is 201 Broadway in Cambridge, the first numbered floor the network used, not the later Kendall tower.
