Technology History | Oracle — The Ground-Floor Room Precision Instruments Rented in Santa Clara
kevin
People treat Oracle as a Redwood Shores campus, and later an Austin tower, that arrived already named after a database.
The company that became Oracle was started here, in Santa Clara, on 16 June 1977, as Software Development Laboratories.
Larry Ellison, Bob Miner and Ed Oates had been at Ampex on a CIA job coded ORACLE. Ellison then went to Precision Instruments. The first SDL room was a ground-floor space PI rented them, one window, a handwritten sign on the door. Ellison put in about $1,200 and Miner about $800. Bruce Scott was the fourth hire. They wrote the first Oracle engine in assembly on a PDP-11 in 128K of memory. Version 1 was never shipped. Version 2, sold in 1979, went to the CIA for $48,000. Ellison installed it himself.
In 1978 they moved to Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park and, in June 1979, renamed the firm Relational Software Inc. The Santa Clara room is gone. It is not 500 Oracle Parkway. It is the first address the corporation ran from.
