People treat JR East as the Yoyogi campus at 2-2-2 that always ran Yamanote loops and a Suica tap from a privatized railway.
The first book was one-seventh of a state railway written as a company overnight.
Japanese National Railways was split and nominally privatized on 1 April 1987.
East Japan Railway Company took the former JNR lines in Greater Tokyo, Tohoku, and the adjoining Koshinetsu prefectures.
The first headquarters stayed in the old JNR head-office building at 1-6-5 Marunouchi, Chiyoda, the same block that now holds Marunouchi Oazo.
The company did not move to Yoyogi, beside Shinjuku Station, until 1997.
Shares began listing in October 1993 when the JNR Settlement Corporation sold 62.5 percent. Full public ownership of the remaining state block was completed in 2002.
The pin is the Marunouchi building where the new company first sat, not the later Yoyogi tower.
The mechanism is a regional passenger book carved out of a national monopoly so the Tokyo commuter surplus could stand alone from the rural deficit lines.
