Health History | Otsuka — Magnesium from Salt-Field Bittern in Naruto
kevin
People treat Otsuka as a Chiyoda listing that always sold Abilify and a bottle of Pocari Sweat from a Tokyo holding company.
The first book was a chemical works beside Tokushima salt pans.
On 1 September 1921 Busaburo Otsuka, then thirty, opened Otsuka Seiyaku Kogyo-bu in Naruto.
The raw material was nigari, the bitter liquor left when seawater is boiled down for salt.
From that residue he made magnesium carbonate listed in the Japanese Pharmacopoeia.
Naruto was already a salt town.
The skill of pulling a medical chemical back out of brine sat in the ground there.
The first office and laboratory later became the Otsuka Memorial House on the factory site at Tateiwa in Muya-cho.
The works stayed a raw-material shop through the war.
In 1946 the same floor began making intravenous solutions, and in 1951 the house put those solutions into glass vials.
In 1968 it shipped Japan's first plastic bottle for an IV drip.
The drinkable drip came later.
Pocari Sweat, launched in 1980, was written as an oral rehydration formula a hospital ward could recognize.
The listed drug company, Otsuka Pharmaceutical, was split out on 10 August 1964.
The factory company that still sits at 115 Kuguhara kept the original Naruto book.
Otsuka Holdings listed in Tokyo on 15 December 2010.
The pin is the Tateiwa works, not the later museum on the strait.
The salt pans are mostly gone.
The mechanism that remains is a provincial chemical shop that learned to put water and salt back into a vein, then into a bottle a runner could carry.
