The first book was two brothers and a renamed startup.
In 2000 Ken Xie and Michael Xie founded Appligation, then ApSecure, then Fortinet, from the phrase fortified networks.
The California filing for Fortinet, Inc. is dated 14 December 2000.
Ken had just left NetScreen, the ASIC firewall house he had founded in 1996.
FortiGate shipped in 2002 as a single appliance that combined firewall, antivirus, and intrusion inspection, later sold as unified threat management.
The company listed on Nasdaq in November 2009.
Headquarters stayed on Kifer Road: first 1090, then the purchased campus at 899 and 909.
The mechanism is one box that inspects packets in hardware, not a software agent on every host.
