People treat Bandai Namco as a Komagata listing that always sold Gundam plastic and a Pac-Man cabinet from a holding company formed in 2005.
The first book was a toy wholesaler on the Asakusa side of Kikuyabashi.
On 5 July 1950 Naoharu Yamashina founded Bandaiya in the Kikuyabashi section of Asakusa, Taito-ku, Tokyo, with paid-in capital of one million yen.
He had taken the toy department from his brother-in-law's textile firm, Bandai Sangyo. The name came from a phrase in the military classic Six Secret Teachings meaning lasting through ten thousand generations.
The shop sold celluloid toys, metal vehicles, and rubber swim rings. In September 1950 it launched Rhythm Ball, its first original product.
Export sales began in March 1951. In April 1951 the first original metal toy, the B26, went on sale.
Warehouses and a shipping yard followed at Komagata. In 1961 the company name became Bandai.
Namco began separately in 1955 as Nakamura Seisakusho in Ikegami, Ota-ku, with two mechanical horses on a Yokohama department-store roof.
The two books were put under one holding company in 2005. Bandai's present headquarters sits at Komagata 1-4-8, a few blocks from the first Kikuyabashi rooms.
The mechanism that remains is a wholesaler that learned to own the mold instead of only the carton.
