People treat Cadence as the Seely Avenue campus that always sold chip-design software beside Synopsys.
The first company was two EDA shops put under one name.
Solomon Design Automation was founded in San Jose in 1983 by James Solomon, Richard Newton, and Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli to automate analog and mixed-signal layout.
ECAD, Inc., a public company co-founded by Ping Chao, Glen Antle, and Paul Huang, sold digital layout tools from the same valley.
In 1988 the two firms merged as Cadence Design Systems, with Joseph Costello named chief executive of the combined book.
California records show the surviving corporation filed on 27 April 1987; the Cadence name dates from the merger year.
Headquarters later settled at 2655 Seely Avenue in North San Jose, on the industrial grid east of First Street.
The product that justified the merger was not a chip.
It was software that let a designer place and route transistors on a screen instead of on a light table, then simulate the circuit before a mask was cut.
That workflow is still what Cadence sells, now with analysis tools that reach from a single die to a board and a rack.
Stand on Seely Avenue and you are at the campus that grew from those two 1980s code shops.
