People treat Hitachi as a Marunouchi tower that arrived already running railways and power plants.
The first shop was here, a repair shed for mining machinery at the Hitachi Mine in Ibaraki Prefecture, in 1910.
Namihei Odaira had left Tokyo Electric Light because he did not want to spend his life installing imported machines. He took the engineering post at Fusanosuke Kuhara's copper mine and built a 5-horsepower induction motor with his own drawings. It is the oldest surviving motor designed and manufactured by a Japanese engineer, later designated an Important Cultural Property with its five design sheets.
The company name combined the characters for sun and rise. Odaira coined it. The first work was still a mine shop making a motor Japan was not supposed to be able to make. Hitachi became independent of the mine in 1911, moved its head office toward Tokyo in 1918, and took the present corporate form in 1920.
Hitachi Origin Park in Hitachi City now keeps the founding story on the ground where the repair shop stood. The Marunouchi headquarters is not the first address. The mine shed is.
