People treat Canon as a Shimomaruko campus that arrived already named after a camera and a copier.
The first bench sat here, in a rented room of the Takekawa Building at Roppongi-cho 62, Azabu, Tokyo, when Goro Yoshida and Saburo Uchida opened Seiki Kogaku Kenkyusho in November 1933.
Yoshida had taken apart a Leica II.
Uchida, then a Yamaichi Securities salesman, put up the room after hearing Yoshisuke Ayukawa argue that Japan should export precision work rather than raw materials.
Takeshi Mitarai, an obstetrician at Seibo Hospital who had delivered Uchida's child, supplied capital.
The laboratory's brief was a domestic 35 mm camera good enough to stand beside the German imports. The first prototype was named Kwanon, after the Buddhist goddess of mercy.
The Canon trademark was registered in 1935. Seiki Kogaku Kogyo was incorporated on 10 August 1937.
Headquarters later moved to Shimomaruko in Ota. Roppongi Hills now occupies a different block of the same district.
The rented room came first.
