Health History | Abbott — Two Thousand Dollars of Granules in a Ravenswood Kitchen
kevin
People treat Abbott as an Abbott Park campus west of North Chicago that always sold diagnostics, nutritionals, and devices from a suburban lake campus.
The first book was a physician's kitchen.
In 1888 Wallace Calvin Abbott, thirty, a University of Michigan graduate who kept a Ravenswood practice and a drug store, began making dosimetric granules in his apartment.
The crude plant extracts then sold as medicine varied from bottle to bottle and went off on the shelf.
Abbott isolated the active alkaloids — morphine, quinine, strychnine, codeine — and pressed them into tiny measured pills.
The first year brought two thousand dollars in 1888 dollars.
He published a fourteen-page catalogue of about one hundred fifty products and pedaled between house calls and the stove.
By 1908 sales reached three hundred sixty thousand dollars in 1908 dollars, and a five-story works rose at 4753 North Ravenswood Avenue.
Neighbors complained of fumes. A 1905 fire in an Abbott printing plant cost two hundred thousand dollars in 1905 dollars.
In June 1920 Abbott broke ground on a twenty-six-acre North Chicago site. He died on 4 July 1921, before the new plant ran.
The mechanism is dose.
A measured granule is a different product from a deteriorating tincture, and the kitchen that first pressed those granules sat in Ravenswood, not at Abbott Park.
The 1891 house at 4605 North Hermitage is a city landmark. The industrial strip on Ravenswood is where the lab grew until the 1920s move.
A visitor walking the Metra tracks still sees the light-industrial block that carried the alkaloid book.
