People treat PPG as the blue-glass towers at One PPG Place that always sold paint.
The first book was a plate-glass works on the Allegheny.
In 1883 Captain John B. Ford and John Pitcairn Jr. organized the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company at Creighton, Pennsylvania, northeast of the city. Earlier American plate plants had failed against Belgian and French imports. Their furnace ran on local natural gas, a cleaner fuel than coal for a glass tank.
The plant made thick, polished plate for storefronts and office blocks then rising in American cities. Headquarters moved downriver to Pittsburgh in 1895. By 1900 the firm was the largest plate-glass maker in the United States and had already added paint.
A soda-ash works at Barberton, Ohio, fed the tanks. Window-glass capacity opened at Mount Vernon, Ohio, in 1907. On 19 December 1968 the letterhead changed to PPG Industries to match a coatings and chemicals book that no longer lived only in plate.
Philip Johnson and John Burgee's glass towers at One PPG Place opened in 1984 on the site of the firm's long Pittsburgh headquarters district. A plaque in the plaza still names the 1883 Creighton works.
The mechanism was domestic plate at a scale that finally undercut European imports, then a paint line that used the same distribution. Creighton sat on river transport and a gas field. Pittsburgh later sold the brand.
The standing pilgrimage site is the plaza at One PPG Place. The first furnace was upriver at Creighton.
