People treat Denso as a Kariya campus that always sold parts to every carmaker.
The first company was Toyota's electrical shop, cut loose after the war.
On 16 December 1949 the electrical and radiator departments of Toyota Motor were spun out as Nippon Denso Co., Ltd.
The new firm kept its plant in Kariya, Aichi, at what is now 1-1 Showa-cho.
The name joined denki, electric, with souchi, equipment.
Toyota remains the largest shareholder, with a little over a fifth of the stock in recent filings.
Sales to the Toyota group later fell below half of revenue.
That split is the mechanism that turned a captive shop into a listed parts company.
The firm dropped Nippon from the English name in 1996.
The headquarters and a small public museum still sit on the Kariya lot.
The public approach is Kariya Station, a short walk from the Showa-cho gate.
