Retail History | Ross Stores — Six Bay Area Floors Converted in August
kevin
People treat Ross as a Dublin, California listing that always sold last season's brands from a Dress for Less rack.
The first off-price book was six junior department stores bought in a single summer.
Morris Ross opened a department store in San Bruno in 1950 and worked the buying and the books himself.
In 1958 he sold the shop to William Isackson and went into real estate.
Isackson stretched the name to six Bay Area floors: San Bruno, Pacifica, Novato, Vacaville, Redwood City, and Castro Valley.
In August 1982 Stuart Moldaw and Donald Rowlett, with investors who included Mervin Morris of Mervyn's, bought those six stores and flipped the format to off-price apparel.
Two more Dress for Less rooms opened that autumn.
Eighteen opened the next year.
The chain listed on 8 August 1985 at 17 dollars a share.
Headquarters later sat in Newark, then Pleasanton, then Dublin at 5130 Hacienda Drive.
The listed company still dates the modern book to that 1982 conversion, not to the 1950 San Bruno counter.
The pin is San Bruno, where the Ross name first hung and where one of the six converted floors stood.
The mechanism is a small family department-store ledger rewritten as a national off-price machine by buyers who already knew how to take someone else's leftover inventory.
