People treat Stanley Black and Decker as a global tool conglomerate that always lived in a yellow tape measure.
The first shop forged door bolts.
In 1843 Frederick Trent Stanley opened a wrought-iron bolt manufactory in New Britain, Connecticut.
The town already made locks and house trimmings. Stanley added hinges, hooks and other hardware and incorporated the business as The Stanley Works in 1852.
William Hart, hired in 1854 at nineteen, became secretary and treasurer within months and drove the expansion.
A cousin, Henry Stanley, founded the Stanley Rule and Level Company in the same city in 1857.
That house bought Bailey, Chaney and Company in 1869 and acquired the Bailey plane patents that woodworkers still chase.
The two Stanley firms merged in 1920 and took a notched-square mark in 1921.
A steel tape rule arrived in 1930. The PowerLock tape followed in 1963, the year the company opened what it called the largest hand-tool plant in the world, still in New Britain.
The city took the nickname Hardware City from this cluster of works.
Headquarters remain at 1000 Stanley Drive.
The 2010 combination with Black and Decker kept the legal seat in Connecticut.
The mechanism that survived is the one Frederick Stanley proved on a bolt: make a small iron part to a standard, stamp the family name on it, and sell it to every carpenter who already works in the same town.
