People treat Mitsui and Co. as a zaibatsu trading house that never closed.
The listed company is a 1947 reconstruction.
The old Mitsui Bussan opened on 1 July 1876 under Takashi Masuda with sixteen employees, after Senshu Kaisha was wound up and Mitsui-gumi's trading desk folded in.
GHQ ordered that house dissolved after 1945.
On 25 July 1947 the surviving traders incorporated Daiichi Bussan Kaisha.
In 1959 Daiichi Bussan merged with several of the split successors and took back the name Mitsui and Co., Ltd.
Headquarters now sit at 2-1 Otemachi 1-chome, on the public plaza above Otemachi Station exit C5.
The mechanism is the sogo shosha book: match a cargo, a mine, a power plant or a loan across offices that the 1876 house first planted in Shanghai, London and New York.
