People treat Microsoft as a Redmond campus that arrived with Windows already named.
The partnership that became the company was formed here, in rented rooms of the Cal Linn Building at the corner of California Street NE and Linn Avenue NE in Albuquerque, on 4 April 1975.
Bill Gates and Paul Allen had written a BASIC interpreter for the MITS Altair 8800. MITS occupied the west end of the same low-rise. Microsoft rented the east end. A plaque on the sidewalk now says so.
The name came later. In a letter dated 29 November 1975, Gates used "Micro-soft" for the partnership. The hyphen dropped. The firm did not incorporate until 1981, after the move to Bellevue.
The 1975 year-end partnership return showed sales of 16,005 dollars. That figure is the one Microsoft's own archive published for the first calendar year.
Allen had joined MITS as director of software in March 1975. The pair signed a BASIC licence with MITS on 22 July 1975. The rooms here were where the royalty fight and the next languages were worked out, not where the first tape was loaded.
Microsoft left Albuquerque on 1 January 1979. The Cal Linn Building is still a strip of offices just north of old Route 66. Pin the public plaque at the intersection. Do not treat the interior as a museum.
