People treat Yamaha as a global audio brand that always lived in a Hamamatsu tower.
The company dates itself from a repaired school organ.
In 1887 Torakusu Yamaha, a medical-instrument repairer then posted in Hamamatsu, was asked to fix an American reed organ at Hamamatsu Ordinary Elementary School, the school later known as Motoshiro Elementary.
The site stood at Motoshiro-cho 102-1, beside the castle park. The school closed in 2017. The lot is still the civic core of the city.
Yamaha's own history records that he finished a working Japanese-made reed organ the same year.
The family name became the brand. The tuning-fork mark came later.
On 12 October 1897 the workshop was reorganized as Nippon Gakki Co., Ltd., with Yamaha as first president. Piano production followed in 1900.
The surviving corporate home is 10-1 Nakazawa-cho, Chuo-ku, a few minutes from Enshu Railway's Yahata station. The public entrance faces the railway side.
A 1935 company publication already shows a brick headquarters and factory on this Hamamatsu ground. The modern campus grew around that industrial plot, not around a later Tokyo office.
The mechanism is ordinary and easy to miss. A repair trade in a castle town learned the inside of a Western instrument, then copied it, then incorporated the copy. Hamamatsu's later cluster of instrument and vehicle makers, including Honda a short walk south, sits on the same provincial workshop habit.
Nippon Gakki became Yamaha Corporation in 1987, the hundredth year the firm counts from the school repair. The motor business was split out in 1955 as Yamaha Motor and is a separate listing.
Stand at Nakazawa-cho for the company that stayed. Walk to the old Motoshiro lot for the room where the first organ was opened.
