People treat General Electric as a Boston and Cincinnati ticker that arrived already making jet engines.
The papers were filed in New York on 15 April 1892.
A special act of the New York Legislature, Chapter 323, created General Electric Company that day by merging Edison General Electric with Thomson-Houston Electric of Lynn, Massachusetts.
Drexel, Morgan and Co. backed the combination so competing lamp and dynamo patents would sit in one book.
The Schenectady plant that became headquarters had already been Edison Machine Works since 1886, when dynamo manufacture moved up the Hudson from Goerck Street in Manhattan.
The works sat on the Mohawk. By 1904 they covered more than 2.5 million square feet of floor and employed about 10,000 people.
Charles A. Coffin, who had run Thomson-Houston, became the first president. Edison remained a director.
Corporate offices later left for New York and then Fairfield. A planned Boston move was never fully completed.
The plant stayed. Building 37 still carries the lighted GE monogram that has faced the city since the 1920s.
In 1975 the research laboratory complex, including Building 37, was listed as a National Historic Landmark.
The S and P 500 name GE now belongs to GE Aerospace after the 2020s split that also produced GE HealthCare and GE Vernova.
The Electric City still dates the company to this river yard and that April filing.
