Consumer History | Amorepacific — The Third Headquarters on the Yongsan Lot
kevin
People treat Amorepacific as a glass tower that arrived already occupying Yongsan.
The lot under this building has held the company since 1956.
The business is older than the lot. In Gaeseong in the 1930s, Yun Dok-jeong sold camellia hair oil from her house. Her son, Suh Sung-whan, founded Pacific Chemical Industrial Company on 5 September 1945, after liberation, still in Gaeseong.
The family moved the work south. In 1956 Suh laid a new foundation on Hangang-ro in Yongsan, the same ground that now carries the street number 100 Hangang-daero.
A ten-storey headquarters rose on that lot in 1976 as Pacific Chemical became the face of the Korean cosmetics industry. The firm later took the name Amorepacific.
The third building on the same site opened in 2017.
David Chipperfield Architects designed a 22-storey cube with a courtyard and three hanging gardens, finished for occupancy that November and January 2018. The company presents the form as a reading of a Korean moon jar, not as a generic office slab.
The public face of the building is the point. The ground floor opens to an atrium with a museum, auditorium, library, and other rooms a visitor can enter from the street. The pin is that public entrance, not an interior floor plate.
Gaeseong is now north of the line. Yongsan is the pilgrimage address that still belongs to the firm.
Stand on Hangang-daero and the sequence is visible in one place: a 1945 company from a household oil shop, a 1956 Seoul lot, a 1976 tower, and a 2017 cube that kept the same ground.
