People treat Mizuho as an Otemachi tower that was always one bank.
The listed parent is a holding company built over three houses.
On 29 September 2000 Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank, Fuji Bank and the Industrial Bank of Japan formed Mizuho Holdings by share transfer.
Mizuho's own chronology and the group's later 20-F filings record that date as the birth of the first major Japanese bank holding company.
On 1 April 2002 the three banks were split and recombined into Mizuho Bank and Mizuho Corporate Bank.
Mizuho Financial Group, Inc. was incorporated on 8 January 2003 and became the listed parent on 12 March 2003.
The name mizuho means a bountiful rice harvest.
The lineage behind the tower is older than the holding company.
Dai-Ichi Bank opened in 1873 under Eiichi Shibusawa as Japan's first national bank.
Fuji Bank grew out of Yasuda Bank.
The Industrial Bank of Japan was chartered in 1902 to fund long-term industry.
Headquarters is Otemachi Tower at 1-5-5 Otemachi, Chiyoda.
