People treat Align as a Tempe listing that always sold an Invisalign tray from an S and P 500 book.
The first book was a Stanford Graduate School of Business project parked in a Menlo Park garage.
In March 1997 Zia Chishti and Kelsey Wirth incorporated Align Technology. Chishti had been an adult orthodontics patient staring at a finishing retainer.
He asked whether a series of those trays could move a whole arch in small steps. Wirth joined from the same class. Apostolos Lerios and Brian Freyburger came in to write the software.
Kleiner Perkins put in the first outside money. The Food and Drug Administration cleared the system in 1998. The trays went on sale in 2000.
The company listed on Nasdaq on 26 January 2001. The mechanism is a scanned model cut into a sequence of clear shells, each one a fraction of a millimetre closer to the plan than the last.
The pin is Menlo Park, the garage city of the first development rooms, not the later Tempe tower.
