People treat Nippon Steel as a Marunouchi ticker that arrived already rolling sheet for cars and rails.
The first furnace was a state furnace.
The Meiji government decided in 1896 to build a fully integrated iron and steel works at Yawata, next to the sea and the Chikuho coalfield. German engineers and Japanese hands from Kamaishi were brought in to raise it.
The red-brick head office in Higashida was finished in 1899. It held the director's room, the technical supervisor's room, and the rooms of the foreign advisers.
On 5 February 1901 Blast Furnace No. 1 was blown in. Open-hearth furnaces, Bessemer converters, and mills for rails and sections followed the same year. The first-year target was 60,000 tons. Output ran higher.
The works later passed through Japan Iron and Steel and Yawata Steel into the present Nippon Steel line. The 1899 head office still stands inside the active plant. It is a component of the UNESCO Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution.
The building is not generally open, but a free viewing deck at Higashida 5 looks onto the brick facade from public ground.
The Nikkei 225 steelmaker still dates its industrial origin to this 1901 blow-in and to this Yawata yard.
