People treat Pfizer as The Spiral on Manhattan's Far West Side that arrived already named Lipitor and a vaccine.
The first compound left a rented brick here, at the corner of Bartlett Street and Harrison Avenue in the Town of Williamsburgh, in 1849.
Charles Pfizer, a chemist from Ludwigsburg, and his cousin Charles F. Erhart, a confectioner, landed in 1848 and borrowed $2,500 from Pfizer's father. They could not afford a new factory. They took an existing red-brick building two blocks off the waterfront, where chemical plants already sat near Newtown Creek, and made santonin — an antiparasitic they coated to taste of almond so a child would swallow it. The slogan on the packages became "Pfizer Quality."
An office opened on Beekman Street in 1857 and moved in 1868 to a four-storey house at 81 Maiden Lane, where the firm put in one of the city's early telephones. Citric acid, from 1880, paid for the expansion along Flushing Avenue. The Brooklyn plant kept running into the 2000s and closed in 2009. Headquarters had already crossed the river.
The visible remnant is the old plant at 630 Flushing Avenue, now let to other tenants. The Spiral came later. The brick on Bartlett Street came first.
