People treat Ulta as a Bolingbrook listing that always sold prestige lipstick and a drugstore mascara from the same aisle.
The first book was a third option between the pharmacy shelf and the department-store counter.
Richard E. George left the presidency of Osco Drug in 1989 and wrote a plan for a store that put mass brands, prestige brands, and a working salon under one roof.
Terry Hanson and a group of other Osco executives followed.
They raised 11.5 million dollars in venture capital.
The company opened in 1990 as Ulta3.
The first of five Chicago-suburb floors was High Point Centre on Roosevelt Road in Lombard, in early October 1990.
Naperville, Morton Grove, Mount Prospect, and Arlington Heights opened in the same wave.
George left in 1995. Hanson ran the chain. The 3 was dropped at the end of 1999.
Ulta listed on Nasdaq on 25 October 2007.
The pin is the Lombard strip center where the first floor opened, not the later Bolingbrook campus.
The mechanism is one self-service floor that refused to choose between drugstore price and department-store brand, then added chairs so the ticket could include a cut.
