People treat Texas Instruments as a Dallas campus and a calculator that sat on a school desk.
The company that became TI was founded here, as Geophysical Service, on 16 May 1930, by John Clarence Karcher and Eugene McDermott.
They sold reflection seismology to oil companies. The first independent contractor in that method was not a semiconductor house. It was a crew that listened for oil under Texas and Oklahoma.
McDermott, Cecil Green and J. Erik Jonsson bought the firm in 1941. Patrick Haggerty joined the laboratory and manufacturing side after the war. The name Texas Instruments was put on the parent in 1951. GSI stayed a subsidiary.
The first commercial silicon transistor and the integrated circuit that Jack Kilby demonstrated in 1958 came out of that electronics shop, not out of a garage with a logo already on the door.
Headquarters later settled on the north side of Dallas. The origin is the 1930 seismic contractor.
What remains is the sequence: a reflection crew, a wartime sonar bench, then a chip company that kept the Texas name.
