People treat Hotel Shilla as a Jung-gu listing that always sold a duty-free bag and a Namsan-view suite from a Samsung affiliate.
The first book was a state guest house rebuilt as a hotel.
Lee Byung-chul took the former Yeongbin-gwan site on the Jangchung slope after Park Chung-hee asked Samsung to put up a house that could receive foreign heads of state.
The hospitality subsidiary was written in 1973. The rooms opened in March 1979 as The Shilla Seoul at what is now 249 Dongho-ro, Jung-gu, named for the Silla kingdom.
Okura of Tokyo advised the first operation. Lee In-hee, the founder's eldest daughter, sat as adviser from January 1979 and ran the house in practice until 1992.
Duty-free floors followed in 1986. Shares listed on the Korea Exchange in 1991, the first Korean hotel book on the board.
Lee Boo-jin, another of the founder's grandchildren, later took the presidency. The pin is the Jangchung garden under Namsan, not a Gangnam tower.
The mechanism is a chaebol service arm built on a government guesthouse so Samsung could host the state and sell rooms, meals, and later duty-free goods from the same slope.
