People treat Nikon as the Nishi-Oi campus that always sold a camera body and a semiconductor stepper from a Shinagawa listing.
The first book was three optical shops folded for the navy and the army.
On 25 July 1917 Tokyo Keiki's optical unit, Iwaki Glass's mirror shop, and Fujii Lens merged as Nippon Kogaku Kogyo with capital from Koyata Iwasaki of Mitsubishi.
The first head office sat inside Tokyo Keiki at Haramachi 120, Koishikawa, now Hakusan 4-chome in Bunkyo. The mandate was rangefinders, microscopes, and optical glass Japan still imported.
The Oi works opened in 1918 and began glass melts. The first photographic lens, later branded Nikkor, followed in 1929. The compact camera named Nikon shipped in 1948. The company took that camera name as its own in April 1988.
The mechanism is still the first one.
A domestic melt of optical glass let a yard grind a rangefinder without a German blank. Whoever owned the melt owned the next sight.
A visitor in Hakusan 4-chome still walks the old Koishikawa grid. The 1917 rooms are gone. The merger is where the book started.
