People treat Arista as the Great America Parkway campus that always sold a cloud spine switch and an Extensible Operating System from a Santa Clara listing.
The first book was three Cisco veterans and their own money.
In November 2004 Andy Bechtolsheim, David Cheriton, and Kenneth Duda incorporated Arastra in Santa Clara to build a 10-gigabit Ethernet switch for the rooms that would become cloud data centres.
Bechtolsheim and Cheriton funded the firm themselves after selling Granite Systems to Cisco and Kealia to Sun. From 2004 to 2008 Cheriton wrote a multi-million-line operating system that broke networking into checkable tasks.
Jayshree Ullal left Cisco in 2008 and became chief executive. The first commercial switch shipped that year under the renamed Arista book. The 7500 spine followed in 2010.
The mechanism is still the first one.
A switch that could isolate a fault without taking the fabric down let a warehouse of servers keep running while one chip failed. Whoever owned that software owned the next rack.
A visitor at 5453 Great America Parkway still faces the later campus. The Arastra name is gone. The first switch is where the book started.
