People treat Alphabet as the Googleplex that always sold a search ad from an S and P 500 book.
The first book was two Stanford graduate students renting a garage.
On 4 September 1998 Larry Page and Sergey Brin incorporated Google Inc. after Andy Bechtolsheim wrote a 100,000 dollar check payable to a company that did not yet exist. They cashed it after the filing.
Susan Wojcicki had bought 232 Santa Margarita Avenue in Menlo Park that year. She rented the garage and three rooms for 1,700 dollars a month so the mortgage would clear. Page and Brin moved servers, a ping-pong table and a washing machine into the house.
The earlier engine at Stanford had been called Backrub. The new name played on googol, a one followed by a hundred zeros.
The mechanism was a rank that treated a link as a vote, so a query returned pages other sites pointed at rather than pages that stuffed the same word.
The house is a private residence later purchased by Google. The pin is the public sidewalk on Santa Margarita Avenue. The firm left after about five months for a Palo Alto office.
