People treat Amazon as the spheres on Lenora Street that always sold a Prime box from an S and P 500 book.
The first book was a Washington corporation named Cadabra.
On 5 July 1994 Jeff Bezos incorporated Cadabra, Inc. Five days after arriving in the state he and MacKenzie rented a three-bedroom house at 10704 Northeast 28th Street in Bellevue. The garage had already been turned into an uninsulated recreation room with a potbellied stove.
A lawyer misheard Cadabra as cadaver. That autumn Bezos renamed the firm Amazon.com after paging through the A section of a dictionary. Shel Kaphan wrote the first catalog code at a door desk in that room.
The site sold books, not warehouses. The first public order went out on 16 July 1995. The title was Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies.
The mechanism was a web catalog that listed more titles than a store aisle could hold, then bought the copy from a distributor after the customer paid.
The house was rebuilt in 2001. It remains a private residence. The pin is the public curb on Northeast 28th, not the rebuilt interior.
