People treat this doorway as the first Starbucks counter.
It is the second address.
On the morning of 30 March 1971, Jerry Baldwin, Gordon Bowker, and Zev Siegl opened a 1,000-square-foot shop at 2000 Western Avenue, just north of Pike Place Market.
HistoryLink records the first customer as their friend Dan Chasan, walking to the market with his two-year-old daughter. The founders brewed him a free sample cup.
They sold whole-bean coffee, tea, and spices. Espresso drinks were not the business yet.
The name came from Starbuck, the first mate in Moby-Dick, after they dropped Pequod as a shop name.
The Harbor Heights building at 2000 Western was torn down in 1976. The store moved a block into the Market, to 1912 Pike Place, where the line still forms.
Starbucks's own history page often says the first store opened at Pike Place Market in April 1971. The dated opening that survives in the Seattle civic record is 30 March 1971, on Western Avenue.
What you can stand in front of is the 1912 shop: the older siren on the window, the cobbles, the market stalls next door.
The mechanism that left this street was not the logo. It was the decision, years later under Howard Schultz, to sell the drink in the shop instead of only the beans to take home.
