The lettering on this green package identifies an Intel PXA270 running at 624 MHz, one of the XScale application processors that placed Intel silicon inside handheld computers before the modern smartphone market took shape.
On 27 June 2006, Intel announced from Santa Clara that it would sell its communications and application-processor business to Marvell for $600 million plus assumed liabilities. The assets included ARM-based XScale processors used in smartphones and personal digital assistants, and the transaction closed that November.
Intel was not abandoning mobile communication entirely.
Management said the sale would sharpen investment around Intel architecture and wireless technologies including Wi-Fi and WiMAX. In practical terms, the company chose to build its low-power future around x86 rather than keep a separate ARM processor line.
The logic was understandable inside Intel's business at the time.
Its advantage came from x86-compatible processors, manufacturing scale, and the software accumulated around PCs and servers. XScale had customers and capable products, but it sat outside that central architecture and competed in markets where Intel had not established the same control.
The decision looks more consequential from the other side of the smartphone transition.
Apple introduced the iPhone the following year, and ARM instruction sets became the foundation of the mobile computing boom. Intel later spent heavily adapting Atom, its x86 family, for phones and tablets, only to cancel major smartphone roadmaps in 2016.
Keeping XScale would not have guaranteed Intel a leading smartphone position.
Products, modems, customer relationships, power efficiency, and software all mattered, and Marvell did not become the defining mobile processor supplier after buying the business. The sale nevertheless removed an existing Intel route into ARM application processors just before that market expanded dramatically.
The photographed chip was installed in a Dell Axim X30, a pocket computer from the interval between organizer and smartphone. Its marks make the strategic fork unusually tangible: Intel once shipped an ARM-based mobile processor under its own name, then sold the operation to concentrate on another path.
The pin marks Intel's public museum and headquarters entrance in Santa Clara, where the divestiture was announced. Visitors can view the company's processor history during posted museum hours without entering private offices.
