At Intel Innovation in the San Jose McEnery Convention Center on 27 September 2022, Intel announced that the Arc A770 desktop graphics card would arrive on 12 October. A starting price of $329 made the flagship of its first Arc generation an unusually aggressive attempt to challenge Nvidia and AMD.
The good was competition. Intel brought a third supplier into discrete PC graphics with dedicated ray-tracing hardware, XeSS image upscaling, strong media engines, and models offering as much as 16 gigabytes of memory.
Arc also demonstrated that Intel could build a modern graphics architecture and ship add-in cards rather than limiting its GPUs to the processors it already sold. Its pricing pushed reviewers and buyers to consider value outside the familiar two-company contest.
The bad was software maturity. Performance varied sharply by game and programming interface at launch, particularly in older DirectX titles, while features such as Resizable BAR were much closer to requirements than optional optimizations.
Those weaknesses were especially damaging in graphics because buyers expect years of old and new games to work reliably. Intel had to improve drivers, translate some older graphics calls, and earn trust through repeated updates after the hardware was already on shelves.
The first generation therefore mixed credible silicon and media capability with a launch experience that often felt unfinished. It was a familiar Intel pattern: enter a growth market with formidable engineering resources, then discover that the surrounding software ecosystem is part of the product rather than a layer added afterward.
Unlike several Intel expansion projects, Arc did not end with the first setback. Driver work continued, and the later Arc B-series reached the market in 2024 and 2025, evidence that Intel treated discrete graphics as an ongoing product line rather than a single experiment.
Arc’s history is consequently both good and bad in the same way. Intel widened consumer choice and established real GPU technology, but early compatibility problems made customers bear part of the cost of building that new competitive position.
