On 18 July 2023, Intel announced an agreement for ASUS to manufacture, sell, and support existing Next Unit of Computing products and develop future NUC systems. The headquarters pin is the corporate anchor for that announcement rather than the site of a photographed handover ceremony.
The decision closed Intel’s direct stewardship of a product family that had begun in 2012. The original NUC compressed a third-generation Core processor and essential PC circuitry onto an approximately four-by-four-inch motherboard, making a full x86 computer small enough to disappear behind a display.
The good was disciplined reduction. NUC systems gave developers, hobbyists, businesses, and home-theater users a compact reference platform with mainstream Intel processors, standard operating systems, and—on many models—replaceable memory and storage.
The format reached well beyond tiny desktop PCs. Variants served digital signs, kiosks, conference rooms, edge-computing installations, and performance enthusiasts, while other manufacturers adopted similar mini-PC proportions and use cases.
The bad followed from the same size. Compact cooling constrained sustained performance and noise, small enclosures limited ports and internal expansion, and barebones kits could look inexpensive before memory, storage, and an operating system were added.
NUC also sat awkwardly inside Intel. It demonstrated what Intel processors could enable, but complete systems put the chipmaker closer to competition with the computer companies it supplied; by 2023 Intel was narrowing investment and decided that a partner could carry the line forward.
ASUS received a nonexclusive license covering manufacture, sales, and support for Intel’s tenth- through thirteenth-generation NUC systems, with authority to design future products. ASUS marked the formal handover in October 2023, preserving the brand even as Intel stopped operating the business itself.
The cover shows a 2020 Intel NUC from both front and rear, not the first 2012 model or the 2023 transfer. The handoff is both a retreat and a validation: Intel exited another finished-systems business, yet the compact-PC idea was valuable enough for a major partner to continue.
